Replacement windlass for a Victoria 34 - recommendations sought

Bill Rayner writes,

I have a Victoria 34 and am thinking of replacing the manual Windlas for an electric one.

Please does anyone have a recommendation.

I have replied privately to Bill that I have a Simpson Lawrence Horizon 1500, but those aren't available any more (stock on Blue Opal in 1998).

Lewmar state that their H2 model is the closest they have for a SL H1500 - available in 8 and 10mm, gypsy, or gypsy and drum. I have no experience with the Lewmar model to recommend or not recommend it though.

Hi Duncan,

My V34 cutter has a Lofrans Cayman windless fitted, however, as my V34 has the bowsprit option, the deck arrangement for hawse pipe etc will be different.

All I can say is that the Lofrans windless is a great piece of equipment.

I have a 1500 W Lofrans Tigress on my Ebbtide 36, and a 700 W Lofrans Dorado on my Frances 26. In my opinion, Lofrans windlasses are great, reliable bits of kit. On both boats, I have a push button station on a cable, long enough that I can raise, or lower, the anchor from either the foredeck, or the cockpit. This is very handy for single handed sailing.

Blue Opal came with foot switches at the bow, and I wired in a console switch at the helm. Getting that wire up the pedestal leg was un-fun back in 2019 - https://www.cricalix.net/2019/07/07/wor … s-control/
