Victoria 34 with cockpit engine access?

I had the pleasure of visiting Wild Song (Victoria 38) yesterday, and discovered she has a nice access to the engine and gearbox area via a lifting cockpit sole. Blue Opal’s access is via a pretty small hatch set in the port cockpit locker - you have to empty the locker and contort yourself to get in.

Has anyone here with a V34 looked into the feasibility of modifying the cockpit sole to fit a removable hatch?

Paul mentioned that he has a tray under his, so it adds more storage in a space that is otherwise unusable.

Re: Victoria 34 with cockpit engine access?

Hi Duncan,

Guy Warner has modified his V34 cockpit sole which includes a hatch to gain access to engine, gearbox and stern gear. This was to assist with the upgrade of the engine to a 40HP Volvo D2-40 3-cylinder.

All I know is that it is very difficult gaining access to the rear of the engine and stern gear. This was one of my main reasons for replacing the standard packed stern gland with the PSS dripless version.

Perhaps Guy could provide some information and photos?

Thanks.

Charlie.

Re: Victoria 34 with cockpit engine access?

Hi Duncan,

I have seen a V34 with an engine access via a lifting cockpit sole. This was back in 2007 when that V34 was called, I think, Victoria Vision -it became Kipper of London and was used as a training boat. I think she then was sold and renamed Ruby Star (owned by Guy Warner). If I'm right he is the man to speak to.

I shall look him up in the handbook, thanks for the suggestion.

Yep, it's a very hard to access place, and I'm not a small bloke. I can get into the locker, but I cannot contort myself safely to get access to the rear of the engine. Getting out of the locker is also much harder than getting in.

Duncan,  Guy Warner and Ruby Star are based down on the south coast in Portsmouth Harbour. He is currently sailing up around the inner Hebrides. If you can make contact with him you might be able to get to see him on his return journey down south. Richard.
