Companionway canvas covers?
Hi folks,
I've been considering a canvas companionway cover for my Victoria 34 and wondered if anyone has installed one, which is practical and looks good too?
I contacted a reputable boat cover company in England during the week and they wanted to charge me two arms and three legs for the pleasure of making me a companionway cover. £320 plus VAT plus carriage. I thanked them very much, but declined their offer.
There are several YouTube videos showing you how to go about making your own cover, but obviously, you need a suitable sewing machine and the experience to go with it.
Here are a few examples of what seem to be mostly home-made covers. Some look good and some no so good.
Here is a professionally made one.
Many thanks.
Charlie.

Re: Companionway canvas covers?
I’m afraid the pictures aren’t very good but we made our own. Material from Hawkhouse or Point North, they sell everything fabric related for boats. Use a denim needle in a standard sewing machine. If going through plastic use silicone spray.
Ours is detachable along the top having four spray hood style poppers (lift the dot marine fittings). It locks at the bottom with two turn buttons. I don’t remove it, prefer just to roll it up and trap it between the garage and the hatch if open. It’s great for damp days or recently when it was blowing old boots, I attached it at the bottom windward corner to prevent any stray waves splashing in (we had one!). It was also pretty good at night, saves putting the washboards in.
You can see the poppers hopefully.

Re: Companionway canvas covers?
Charlie,
We have a companion way cover that rolls up onto the hatch lid when not in use, and uses some bungee to hold it down in the wind. I don't have a photo on this tablet but I'll send you one ASAP from my laptop.

Thanks very much for the photos and info guys.
Something to tackle myself, but will have to do some research and undertake some practice too before making the actual cover.

Re: Companionway canvas covers?
I intend to make two companion way covers for Inyoni, similar to the ones I have on my Ebbtide 36.
The first will be a drop down water resistant cover, this will be used in light rain.
The second will be an insect screen cover, which will extend horizontally from the opened sliding hatch, and then drop down. Both will attach to the aft edge of the companion way sliding hatch using studs, and the bottoms will be weighted using a sewn in, foam refrigerating insulating tube, filled with lead fishing sinkers.

Re: Companionway canvas covers?
Hi Charlie
I made a cover a couple of years ago as I was fed up with rain coming in when going down wind. I fix it using 4 press studs fitted to the companion way and included a zip to make access easier.
I think the fabric is sunbrella fabric (I was given it about 10 years ago) and used a standard sewing machine with a Denim needle, as Jim suggested.
Not sure why the photo is rotated.

This works very well but I have no idea who made it. It rolls up and tucks above and behind the hatch, still attached by 3 press studs.
