Heat Exchangers on Betamarine Diesels

Hi,
Just some info for those of us that have Betamarine diesels with heat exchangers.
I inspected mine today and this was the state of the heat exchange tube stack and the cap.
... so worth putting this job on the maintenance schedule if you haven't already tackled it. I'm assuming that this level of gunk would impact the flow of cooling water.

What type of a strainer do you have on your raw water intake?

Re: Heat Exchangers on Betamarine Diesels

Hi Bill,
I had a traditional bronze tall strainer with a mesh tube strainer (which worked well).
I don't believe the issue is coming through the intake.
I think the calcification on the heat exchanger was more likely the result of the engine anodes eroding. I had not cleaned the tube stack for a few years ... Betamarine recommend every year (or 250 hours if sooner).  I hadn't experienced any issues with overheating but it's probably a job worth adding to the maintenance schedule.  I have now sold Pintail and she's now in Falmouth.
