Destination River Blyth.

Destination River Blyth.

Dear all,

Last week we departed from Den Helder to pay a visit to the river Blyth for having a pint at the Bell Inn at Walberswick. (Inspired by one of the crews featuring in a chapter of Adlard Coles’ heavy weather sailing)

Crossing the North Sea went all well, dealing with good winds, no winds, light shipping and the occasional fog patches. Spirit was high when we had the ‘land in sight’ moment by means of the white lighthouse of Southwold. Contact was established with the harbor authorities, which came with the sobering statement that due to COVID no shipping from abroad was allowed to make landfall. While not being allowed to enter port, we at least wanted to get a good look at the river entrance and the area before setting sail to plan B, Lowestoft.

After arrival at Lowestoft I had a conversation with the authorities about the refusal of our planned landfall at river Blyth. They were clueless as well about it. To their knowledge, restrictions regarding harbor visits were lifted, while taking good care in practicing the right measurements regarding health issues as are stated by the authorities are in force.

Question; Of course there is information on regulations, but were to find it? I did some searching in advance that shows that information on the subject leaves room for interpretations.

Anyway, the trip back was also great sailing, while looking back at a great stay at Lowestoft. Hope to see river Blythe soon in the near future.

Re: Destination River Blyth.

Marc - sorry to hear you couldn't get in to Blyth - not sure why.

Sometimes difficult to get an accurate picture of what is happening at a local level.   For the 'bigger picture' the RYA and Cruising Association have some information, but on individual stops it could be that it is worth asking on the East Coast section of YBW.com forums.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the reply. I'll have a look at the YBW.com forum.
