South Coast Early Summer 2018 Rally and Cruise - Report

South Coast Early Summer Rally and Cruise
Portsmouth Harbour
11th - 13th May 2018

Four yachts, Albertine (Jon & Lynda Spencer), Ruby Star (Guy Warner), Panache (Andy Gleadle) and Wynn (Richard & Meryl Saunders) met up in Gosport Marina on Friday 11th May for our first rally of the season after rather rough trips in wind over tide conditions from their various home ports.  After aperitifs onboard Albertine we moved on to enjoy rather filling meals at the nearby Castle Tavern.

Saturday morning arrived with good sunshine but no wind!  Ruby Star and Wynn left the marina around 9.30 and headed for Osborne Bay under motor, where they anchored for coffee then lunch.  They were joined by Cadenza (John Cade, Roy Dawkins and Alf Tracey) who had left the Hamble that morning after emergency engine repairs.

Albertine arrived at the anchorage having left Gosport a little later than the others in order to bend on the sails, although they proved to be of little use in the benign conditions.  As we returned to Portsmouth Harbour we were joined by Panache who was making the most of the very light wind that had come up during the afternoon.

It had started to drizzle as we entered the harbour and made our way up to Port Solent where we were booked in for the night.  Tim & Dee Clarke had yet to get their yacht, Widgeon, back in the water so had arrived at the marina by road and joined us on Wynn for afternoon tea and cake.  We later adjourned to ‘O Sole Mio’, an Italian restaurant at the far end of the Port Solent boardwalk but fortunately by now the rain had stopped.  Here we enjoyed an excellent meal in what appeared to be one of the most popular restaurants in the area.

Afterwards we retired to Ruby Star where Guy was, once again, an excellent host supplying us with an assortment of after dinner drinks and amusing stories.
