Design for bimini / sun shade for Victoria 30 usable whilst sailing?

Hello -

I am wondering if any of the Victoria 30 owners has a Bimini or sun shade they use whilst sailing? Aziza has now moved to the Mediterranean and it is too hot to sail without one in the summer.

The canoe stern makes it a little complicated compared to the normal approach of something rectangular on two or three fixed length u-shaped tubes. The position of the traveller and mainsheet back in the cockpit and relatively low boom also. I have been debating a few approaches but am not fully convinced yet so thought to reach out to get some inspiration.

I would be very keen to get a design (measurements / plan) or just photos of something workable I can then mock up. Alternatively, any recommendations for people that have made and would do a better job than me would be welcome.

Suggestions or plans welcome!

Thank you and happy sailing

Chris

This is the only cockpit enclosure / Bimini I have seen fitted a V 30.
Don't have one on ours (Sabbatical)

Re: Design for bimini / sun shade for Victoria 30 usable whilst sailing?

Hi Chris,
I had exactly the same dilemma on Inyoni, my Frances 26. Here is what I did, hopefully t will give you some ideas.
First I changed to an end of boom mainsheet set up. To do this, I added to extra, aft angled legs to the pushpit, and a cross over tube as a traveller. The mainsheet block is attached to this by means of a wrapped Dynema soft shackle.
The forward end of  “sailing awning”, as I call it, is attached to to dodger using a zipper. The after edge is supported on a hinged SS bow which is supported on the pushpit, and tensioned by simple line tackles. There are also two zippered side panels. If you look at the Chuck Oaine Facebook page, you can see some photos. In June I helped a friend deliver his Victoria 800 from Plymouth to Portugal and once South of Lisbon we got fried!
