The South Coast Social at Sarisbury

The social was held on Sunday, the 28th February 2010 at the Sarisbury and District Community Centre, which has been the venue for this event for as long as anyone can remember. Attendance was good with 24 members and guests present and even the weather turned out to be fine, despite some very heavy rain earlier.

The luncheon was supplied by the members with everyone bringing something. John Tyer had monitored the offerings to insure a balnced diet, while Olive Hathaway had a willing band of helpers in the kitchen. The bar was open for those of us not involved in laying out the spread!

The Victoria II Cup is presented to the winner of the Cruising Log competition, usually at our Annual General Meeting in November, to hold for the year. Unfortunately, the winners for 2009 were unable to be at that meeting and so the social provided an opportunity to present them with the trophy.

Peter Cosker presented the trophy to Simon and Joanna Bound for their very comprehensive log on Caladh's continuing voyage starting from Gibraltar and finishing at Cagliari in Sardinia.

As the bar area was not in use by any other group, we took the opportunity to use the rather more comfortable chairs there for our talk by Dennis Skillicorn.

Dennis was an absolutely amazing character who seemed to know everyone and have done most things. We discovered things about both Chay Blyth's and Lord Mountbatten's characters that you just wouldn't have believed. Dennis had first hand experience of ocean racing and flying aeroplanes from Hawks to Concord! He had tales both humourous and tragic to tell and kept us completely spellbound for an hour.

After a well deserved vote of thanks, raffle prizes were drawn and collected and we all enjoyed afternoon tea.
