Panache

Panache is a sloop-rigged Frances 26 that was built in 1992 but which had languished on the hard at the Hythe Marina Village for the last couple of years. She is now owned by Alan Pindar, whose account of some early problems follows.

I bought Panache in 2008.

She has seen little use but has suffered serious neglect in the last few years. The kicker was damaged and the fuel tank contained a lot of water and black sludge. To get her home to Weymouth from Hythe marina I changing the engine oil and some service parts. I rigged the fuel feed and return to a clean jerry can, and motored to Yarmouth. The next day there was little wind so I motored to Weymouth, intending to put the boat on a berth in the marina. She was leaking about a bucket of water a day into the bilge so I decided to get her lifted out instead. I found the leak to be from the stern tube/hull seal rather than the stern gland.

Among other items she now has new standing rigging, genoa furler, re-seated stern tube, new stern gland, engine water pump, etc. Six weeks later she has reached Weymouth marina.

Next I planned to replace the fuel tank, so removed the engine and the old tank. I was surprised when I tried to recover the filler tube, there was a crunch and a large part of the top of the tank pulled away with it. I now have a new tank that I had made 2 1/2" wider and 5" longer, increasing the capacity to 75 litres. A bracket was welded in the wrong place so it has taken longer than planned to re-fit it.

I would like to complete the fitting, and re install the engine in time to attend the Lymington rally, however there are a few other tasks to complete before I will feel confident taking her to sea. The main one being to fit the new VHF radio I have bought.
