Cathexis II

Cathexis II with Eric Karas at the Tide Mill Yacht Harbour

Eric spotted us in a coffee shop at Woodbridge and we were invited to have a look at 'Cathexis II', as her refit was almost complete.

We had last heard from Eric in January 2008 when 'Cathexis II' had reached Portosin in Galicia. Her progress home had been delayed by the need to source a replacement gearbox from Holland and she was too late to cross Biscay until the following spring (an insurance requirement.)

Due to work commitments, Eric was unable to sail her home himself. This had to be entrusted to a delivery crew, which was not without problems of its own that caused further delays, expense and frustration.

In due course, 'Cathexis II' was brought to Robertsons Boat Builders for the long awaited refit. Robertsons is just a few hundred yards up the River Deben from the Tide Mill Yacht Harbour but that short distance requires a high spring tide for a yacht of this draught and so the final stages of the work were being completed at the yacht harbour on the 27th July 2009, the day these photographs were taken.

The plan for the remainder of the day was for 'Cathexis II' to depart near high water and to pick up a mooring at Ramsholt Quay for the night, which is nearer the entrance to the river and not subject to the same tidal constraints. Eric would be accompanied on this short trip by one of Robertson's staff.

In the morning, others would rejoin 'Cathexis II' for a shake-down and acceptance sail probably in the vicinity of Roughs Tower just south of the Harwich Channel.

If all went well then she would continue through Harwich Harbour and up the River Orwell to be based at Woolverstone Marina above Pin Mill. I understand that Eric has one of the hammerhead berths.

'Cathexis II' won't be there for long, on this occasion, as Eric will be departing for some summer cruising very shortly afterwards. We hope to receive some progress reports and wish him fair winds and fine weather.

Speaking of weather, the skies have darkened dramatically and it looks as though rain will accompany their departure, as the following photographs show!
