Anitra

'Anitra' is Gordon and Doreen Fraser's cutter-rigged Victoria 34. They bought her in 2004 and many of you will have known her when she was called 'Tigger'.

We bought her last September and brought her down to Cornwall.  We over-wintered at Gweek boatyard where we did a lot of work in all areas to bring her back to a good standard. The engine had to be re-built, something we had not reckoned on, as well as lots of overhauling and generally smartening up. We re-named the boat 'Anitra', launched her in May, and keep her on our mooring near Flushing.

We spent a couple of months familiarising ourselves with the boat and making sure that everything worked as it should.  We then took 'Anitra' on a cruise to South Brittany for the first two weeks of August. We got down to Belle Isle and the Morbihan in good time and re-visited familiar places from previous trips with our former boat. Houat, Hoedic, the Glenans are old favourites and we also went well up the Odet and stayed at Bono near Auray.

We had some super weather and even tried out the cruising chute 3 or 4 times. On the way back we stayed on Ile de Molene and did a lunch stop at Lampaul. We had hoped to stay there overnight before crossing the Channel but a forecast of W5 did not attract the crew, so we had a bouncy passage through the channel to the south of Ushant in order to stay the night at L'Aber il Dut.

We left there at 0530 BST next morning and set off for Falmouth with a forecast of SW 4-5. After a quiet start, the westerly swells set in and the wind gradually increased to 5-6 gusting 7. We had some very heavy showers and one, whilst crossing the shipping lanes, was very unwelcome. Luckily the wind stayed SW until we were in Falmouth Bay and it began to move around to NW. We had quite a rollercoaster ride but were pleased with the way the boat performed and handled. We had our fastest ever crossing, arriving in Falmouth Harbour at 2230 BST.

So all in all we have had a good summer's sailing and are feeling much more happier with the boat.

Best wishes

Gordon and Doreen Fraser
