Victoria 26 (and Frances 26?) Reefing Winch
My mast-mounted reefing winch is almost impossible to turn without vigorous use of a winch handle. It may be time to replace it - has anyone got any recommendations?

Hello Ian
Have you tried servicing it? They are not that complicated and spares are available.

The problem is that the drum is practically an interference fit on the spindle. Quite how that has come about I don't know, but it's been suggested to me that the spindle has a plastic coating which has been greased in the past - wrongly, because it makes the plastic swell.
It's a Barton (Australia) winch, by the way.

Ian.
If you decide to replace it, the mast winch fitted to my boat is a Lewmar 6. It does the job OK.
