South Coast Late Summer Rally Island Harbour, Cowes - Report

Our late Summer Rally took place over the weekend of 8th/9th September at Island Harbour on the Medina River, about 3 miles upriver from Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Meryl & I had sailed on Wynn from Chichester to East Cowes on Thursday morning so it was just a short motor up to Island Harbour on Friday morning. Here we met up with Tim & Dee, who had organised the event, on their Victoria 30, Widgeon. We caught up with all their summer sailing trips over a coffee on board Widgeon before enjoying a pleasant walk alongside the river up to Newport.

The next morning we were joined in quick succession by Nick and Bridget on Gracious Lady, Sue on Que Sera, Guy on Ruby Star, Jerry and Philippa on Tracker and Andy on Panache so a good turnout of 5 Victoria 30s, a Victoria 34 and a Frances 26.

Their timing was perfect - the kettle had just been put on and coffee and cakes were served on board Wynn. We managed to squeeze 10 people into the cockpit with Meryl in the companionway passing up cups of tea and coffee!

Later in the day Tim and Dee hosted a pontoon party next to Widgeon.  Unfortunately, by this time, the sky had clouded over and the breeze made it a little chilly but Dee’s amazing spread of nibbles and Pimm’s was enjoyed by all.

At this point we were joined by Chris McNally who arrived by car.  Unfortunately he had been unable to come on his Victoria 30, Aziza, as she had suffered steering problems the weekend before and was being repaired.  Aziza is a fairly new acquisition for Chris and he was pleased to look around the other yachts to gain  deas for future projects on his new boat.

It was a very short walk to the Breeze restaurant where we were able to warm up and enjoy a meal together. It seemed to be a very popular location; most of the  tables were occupied and there was a wedding party going on in the adjoining room nevertheless we all got our chosen dishes in reasonable time with the conversation inevitably involving our boats and the trips we had been on since we last met up. Afterwards Guy invited us back to Ruby Star for a night cap so our thanks go to him for his hospitality.

Due to the tide most of us left early the next morning for the return trips to our home ports so it just remains for me to thank Tim & Dee for organising another successful and well attended rally and for supplying most of the offerings at the pontoon party.
